In 1981 I sent some photos of my fantasy art to a little known company in Wisconsin called T.S.R. Hobbies (Tactical Studies Rules) that I had heard about from a friend that told me they were hiring a lot of artists at the time. T.S.R was producing role playing games and books about mythological characters with special powers and abilities featuring knights. Elves, dwarves, magicians and all sorts of weird folks interacting with and battling fantastic creatures like flying dragons, orcs, zombies, minotaur's and trolls and in addition to that they had just created a board game called Dungeons & Dragons. A little while later Gary Gygax, the founder of TSR Hobbies contacted me and asked if I would be interested in doing artwork for them for their books. I accepted and began illustrating some role playing books for them from my home for a while and I remember enjoying the pay and doing the illustrations and liked the adventure themes and drawing dragons and orcs all day. But after I illustrated two books for them I think I became disillusioned a bit after a while by the violence depicted in the books especially with knives and fire and such since they were meant to be read by young children really so, when they asked me if I'd like to illustrate more, I declined. It was more a feeling really of not only that aspect as it was a feeling of I wanted to explore other directions of art for myself at that time I guess. I didn't want to become one of those artists that were known for just painting dragons, sword weilding knights and role playing related art all my life. Many now well-known artists painted for them at that time and the company became rather famous later on as movies and TV shows were made of their stories. I would guess now that these days most people in the world would have heard of the name Dungeons & Dragons. Shown below are some of my illustrations from the T.S.R. Hobbies "Pick a Path to Adventure" books I did for them back then.
